In this article
Visiting Highclere Castle requires navigating a 17th-century building and a 5,000-acre estate. While the ground floor accommodates some mobility aids, you will encounter restrictions regarding stairs, motorised devices, and outdoor paths.
Is Highclere Castle wheelchair friendly?
The castle is only partially wheelchair friendly. Only manual wheelchairs can access the ground floor.
Because the castle is a historic Grade I listed building, modern accessibility features are limited. Motorised wheelchairs are strictly banned inside the castle. If you rely on a motorised chair, you will need to switch to a manual wheelchair to tour the ground-floor state rooms.
Can wheelchairs access the upstairs bedrooms?
No, wheelchairs cannot reach the upper floors. There are no public elevators anywhere in the castle.
The famous upstairs bedrooms, often seen in Downton Abbey, are only accessible by steep stairs. Visitors unable to climb these stairs will not be able to tour the upper levels of the house.

Are the gardens and grounds accessible?
The 5,000-acre parkland is largely open, but the terrain includes uneven paths.
While you can explore the Capability Brown-designed gardens, the ground can be uneven. Comfortable walking shoes are required for those on foot. Motorised wheelchairs are allowed outdoors on the estate, unlike inside the castle.

Are guide dogs allowed?
Registered guide dogs are the only dogs permitted on the estate and inside the castle.
All other dogs and pets are strictly banned from the grounds and the building. If you plan to bring a guide dog, ensure you have the proper registration credentials with you.

What other mobility or child items are banned?
You cannot bring prams or pushchairs inside the castle.
Storage is available at the reception desk for these items. Large rucksacks are also banned indoors, so you should bring a small bag or cross-body purse instead.
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Manual Wheelchairs | Permitted on ground floor only |
